ANTARCTIC

A
SEPARATED WORLD
People of antiquity
believed the world
ended some place
at the south of
continents then
known. In a way,
they were right.
As one is leaving
the Drake Pass and
the Cape Horn submerges
under the horizon
at our backs, the
world we know is
also left behind.
It is replaced by
a new world, a world
were the only trees
are the Christmas
trees brought by
temporary residents,
where there are
not international
borders, where the
birds that does
not fly wear tuxedoes
and those who fly
do it like a dive-bomber,
where a white blanket
covers the landscape
and men let their
more ecological
and his more universal
brotherhood facets
emerge honestly.
Welcome to the Antarctic.
Last frontier in
more than one sense,
the Antarctic is
a scientific and
ecological treasure
that attracts as
much as scientists
as explorer and
travelers. It hides
more than one surprise.
By one side, in
spite of owning
the world's biggest
reserves of fresh
water is the driest
continent of them
all: the air humidity
is very low. On
the other hand,
in spite of lacking
of summits higher
than 5,200 meters,
the Antarctic is
the continent of
higher average height
above sea level.
But one does not
come to the Antarctic
just to be in the
drier or higher
continent. One comes
because of its incredible
beauty. By the experience
of being in a pristine
environment where
man is still just
a visitor. To discover
that the Antarctic
ice is different
to that of Patagonian
glaciers. To chat
with scientists
and investigators
from many countries,
that lives and works
neck and neck at
their remote bases.
And to hobnob with
penguins and seals.
Chile has several
scientific bases
here and what is
considered the only
village at the continent
- Villa Las Estrellas-
where even live
children..
