of Tierra del Fuego province,
was founded in 1848. It
has a surface of 3,321
sq. km. and 5,406 inhabitants

them descendant of the
first immigrants from
Chiloe and Croatia that
arrived to the island,
motivated by the existence
of gold or looking for
a better future..
This small city has
hotels, restaurants and
basic and public services
enough to satisfy any
need.
To travel to Porvenir,
crossing the Magellan
Strait, there are air
(15 minutes) and sea (2,5
hours) services.
Once in the city, it is
possible to visit "Fernando
Cordero Rusque" Museum,
which has an interesting
sample of fauna of Tierra
del Fuego, an archeology
section wit the mummified
rests of an island aborigine.
In the History section
are testimonies of pioneer
filming in Chile, the
discovery and exploitation
of gold and an interesting
photograph sample of the
Selknam.
La plaza es otro atractivo
que invita a la fotografía.
En sus alrededores destaca
la iglesia San Francisco
de Sales, antigua construcción
de fines del siglo pasado,
levantada gracias a la
inspiración de
Monseñor Fagnano,
perteneciente a la Orden
Salesiana.
It is also interesting
to visit the seaside promenade
with its Flags Square,
Croat Park and Memory
Park that gathers an interesting
exhibition of machinery
and ancient vehicles from
the end of 19th century.
In this place outstands
the Monument to the Selknam
Indian, made with natural
wood. At the end of the
tour it's necessary to
return to Bahia Chilota,
ferry terminal to sail
back to Punta
Arenas.
