Created in 1969 and expanded in 1985, this National Park is the largest belonging to the Republic of Chile, with an area of 3.525.901 hectares. This place is famous because of its huge ice surfaces, highlighting Southern Ice Field (Dr Juan Bruggen) which spread out for 11.400 km2 (1.140.000 hectares). There are some ocean trips offering spectaculars journeys to Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, sailing through Last Hope Sound to Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers. Along the journey, you can admire scenery encircled by hills and forests and by seadogs gamboling and thousands of cormorants unfolding their wings.
The vessel gets close to Balmaceda, a glacier which is actually moving backwards, to shortly continue and make a stop at PuertoToro where passengers can leave the vessel and stroll along the lagoon until they get close to the Serrano Glacier’s feet.
