Each monument takes us to a different and important part of the history of the colonization of the region, visiting many tombs with centuries of age.
Fuerte Bulnes – Puerto del Hambre Chilean Geographical Centre
Nowadays the Fort is a historical reconstrucción of the original one where the first chilean village was settled when the Strait and the surroundings were taken in 1843. Placed in a hill called Santa Ana. Puerto de Hambre is in the borders of the Coast of Bahia Buena, where the Captain Sarmiento de Gamboa Founded the city “ Rey Don Felipe” in March of the year 1584. This attempt of Spanish colonization had a tragical ending, its inhabitants starved to death. Years later, the English corsary Thomas Cavendish ashore in the place and finding the rests of the old colony rebaptized the place as “Port Famine” name that is still preserved. At the entrance of the Historical Park Rey Don Felipe, in the fork of the road there is a small monument indicating the Chilean Geographical Centre( Arica/South Pole)

English Cemetery
It was declared National Monument and it was destined to the foreign personnel of the estancias of the great Societies, formed mainly by Scottish cattle breeders. Buried there lie some pioneers from the beginning of the 19th century like the captain of the Boat Beagle “ Pringle Stokes”(1828)

Pioneers Cemetery of Punta Arenas
In Carrera Point there is a historical cemetery of the colonization times (1885 and 1890) on the road

Posesion Cemetery
In this National Monument are buried many pioneers of the beginning of the 20th century and is a testimony of human presence along the time
Location: 249kms from Punta Arenas near Punta Dungenes.
Access: 59 kms. on the Route 9 , then take the international route CH255 and by the km 130 ½ take the route Y 545 and go 60kms.
Buque Quemado Pioneers Cemetery
It is located by the shores of the Strait and it is characterized by the small graves built of wood and metal. They are mainly tombs of the pioneers that arrive to the area by the beginning of the 20th century some of them are only 50 years old.
Location: Primera angostura, 197kms. from Punta Arenas.
Access: 59 kms north on route 9 take route CH255 for 130 ½ kms then take the right side Route Y 545 and go another 8 kms.
Monument Ciudad Nombre de Jesus
First attempt of modern population of the austral lands, which was not successful due to the weather and the continuous stalking of the aborigines, among others. Nowadays you can see there the Monumental Cross that commemorates the first Spanish settlement on Chilean territory during the 17th century.
Location: 277kms. from Punta Arenas on the eastern mouth of the Strait of Magellan.
Access: Starting in Punta Arenas go 59 kms. on the route 9, take route CH 255 for another 130 ½ kms and then go on the route Y545 for 88 kms.
