Rural Villages

In the middle of the Patagonian landscape the human being opens a place to live in harmony with nature

Rio Seco
This small coastal village by the shore of the Strait of Magellan, it is the first industrial refrigerator of Patagonia: The Ltd. South American Syndicate, which worked in 1903 with the sheep from the estancias of the Provinces of Magallanes and Tierra del Fuego, which were ship directly on its old deck to different places in the world, mainly England. In this village there is bird, dolphin and sea wolf watching. You can also visit the arrival spot of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance after being rescued from the Antarctic Continent and the traditional chapel Nuestra Señora del Carmen. 

Location: Old Road, 12.5 kms. north fro Punta Arenas

Oazy Harbor Estancia
The ex Estancia Oazy Harbor known in the old times a Tough Gringos is one of the oldest in Magallanes. By the year 1878 Mr. Reynard and Roig place some cattle on those lands. Then, in 1884, Reynard was the only owner until 1903 when the Magellan Cattle Society bought the area. It was 185 thousand hectares of field divided on 67 plots that supported 130.000 sheep, 500 cows and 250 horses.
Its wool production in 1981 reaches 360.000 kg. and the cattle reproduction, like In Punta Delgada, 82 % over 65.000 mothers. 

Location: 110kms. from Punta Arenas.

San Gregorio Estancia
This is one of the best built and more comfortable estancias in Patagonia. It is a Southern style construction with special architectonic features of the Australian and New Zealand edifice. 
Among the buildings of the Rural-Industrial village, is the shearing workshop detaching its dimensions and skeleton showing great beams.
Settled in Patagonia in 1870 with and extension of 91805 hectares of field to support 122849 sheep, 387 cattle heads and 401 horses. 

Location: 118 kms. north from Punta Arenas.
How to get there: Take Route 9 and turn to Route CH 255 in km 45, then ride it for 73kms. to reach the attraction, located by the shore of the Strait.

Villa Tehuelche
Its main activities are cattle breeding and farm work. In this place there is a famous festival during January called the Shearing Festival where you can watch the development of some of the best and more selective techniques for shearing the sheep of the zone.

Rio Verde Village
Small village of scenic and cultural attraction, with English style buildings and a natural frame surrounding it, detaching its calm environment and the hospitality of its inhabitants. 

Location: 93kms. northeast from Punta Arenas.

Bernardo O’Higgins Village
Here you can see more recent buildings made by the Municipality of San Gregorio in land given by the Cooperative, which adds a more modern aspect to the village. Detaching the beautiful school, the municipal gym for indoor sports practice, the rural first aid place with its ambulance and nurses, and a pre-school.
