The Frei Base was founded in 1969 as Presidente Frei Meteorological Center. In 1980 the runway named Teniente Rodolfo Marsh was created and in 1984 the Villa Las Estrellas was inaugurated, forming a complex that is one of the main research centers and one of the three main meteorological and sailing stations of the Antarctic.
