FUERTE BULNES AND PUERTO DEL HAMBRE

Located approx. 60 km. south of Punta Arenas. Mainly interesting by its historical importance, since Puerto del Hambre was the first Spanish colony in the coast of the Magellan Strait and Fuerte Bulnes the first Chilean settlement.

Today Fuerte Bulnes is a historical reconstruction of the first fort where Chile established the first Patagonian settlement and took possession of the Strait and adjoining lands (1843). It is located in the km. 60 of route 9 south, on an elevation of point Santa Ana, an hour and a half from Punta Arenas.

Puerto del Hambre is in the bank of Bahia Buena coast, where Captain Sarmiento de Gamboa founded the city King Don Felipe, on March of 1584. This attempt of Spanish colonization had tragic end: their inhabitants starved to death. Years later the English corsair Thomas Cavendish anchored in that place and finding only the rests of the old colony, rebaptized the place with the name of "Port Famine", Puerto del Hambre in Spanish, name that keeps until today.
