PATAGONIAN
CHANNELS
Through
the broken up geography
of the Chilean Patagonia
it is possible to
set out for a trip
by Patagonian channels,
from Puerto Montt
to Puerto Natales,
dodging islands
and peninsulas,
gazing fiords, glaciers
and Patagonia vegetation.
.
The zone denominated
Patagonian Channels
begin (from north
to south) at the
ADALBERTO channel
and TEMPANO fiord
(in the border
of Regions of Aisen
and Magallanes)
and goes down including
all the SOUTH PATAGONIAN
ICE FIELD ZONE
by the west and
all the channels
and fiords of Ultima
Esperanza province
by the east. The
zone reaches up
to PEEL fiord that
borders by its
north coast the
Bernardo O'Higgins
National Park.
Among the more
outstanding glaciers
we may find the
PIO XI glacier
and the GEIKE glacier.
RUNNING
THE CHANNELS FROM
NORTH TO SOUTH
The
entrance to the
PATAGONIAN CHANNELS
zone is through
Messier channel
until Puerto Eden
(where lives the
last people of
the natives Chilean
Alacalufes), at
the east of South
Patagonia Ice Fields
through the Paso
del Indio. Continuing
the journey towards
the southern zone,
you will navigate
by the Paso del
Indio, Grappler,
Wide, Concepcion
and Sarmiento channels.
In this point,
and at your left,
is the Bernardo
O'Higgins National
Park and behind
it, the Torres
del Paine National
Park.
On the way it
may observed the
sinking of the
Costa mountain
chain at the Taitao
peninsula, and
the breaking up
of the Andes mountain
chain after the
Bernardo O'Higgins,
al this accompanied
by a jungle vegetation
of lengas, coigues
and nirres.
